Dip Powder vs Gel: Which Is Right for You?

Both last about 3 weeks. Both look beautiful. So how do you choose? A side-by-side breakdown from London Ontario's nail technicians.

May 26, 2026· Gel · Dip Powder · Comparison

The short version

  • Gel: lightweight, flexible, glossy — best for everyday wear and most natural-nail clients.
  • Dip powder: thicker, more durable — best if you're hard on your hands or have softer natural nails.

Both last 2–4 weeks. Both come off cleanly with a proper soak-off. The real difference is feel and durability.

How they're applied

Gel is brushed on as a liquid and cured under an LED lamp. Each layer cures in 30–60 seconds.

Dip powder is built up by dipping the nail into a coloured powder, then sealing with an activator. No UV lamp required.

How they feel

Gel feels almost like your natural nail — flexible and thin. Dip feels slightly thicker, more like a soft acrylic. Neither is uncomfortable, but if you don't like the feel of length or bulk, gel will feel more invisible.

Durability

Dip wins. Clients who are gardening, parenting, doing manual work, or hitting the gym hard tend to get more wear out of dip. Gel is more likely to chip at the tip under that kind of stress.

Removal

Both soak off in acetone in about 15 minutes. Neither should require filing the natural nail plate — if your technician is filing the surface to remove either product, find a new technician.

So which should you book?

  • Office job, low impact, want a glossy classic look → gel
  • Active hands, want maximum wear, prefer matte or velvet finishes → dip
