How Long Do Gel Nails Really Last?

A properly applied gel manicure lasts 2–3 weeks. Here's what changes that number, what to ask your technician, and how to make yours last longer.

The honest answer

A properly applied gel manicure lasts 2 to 3 weeks without chipping. Some clients stretch to 4 weeks before refilling — others see lifting at day 10. The difference almost always comes down to three things: prep, application, and aftercare.

Prep is everything

Before the polish ever touches your nail, a good technician will:

  • Push back (not cut) your cuticles
  • Lightly buff the surface so the gel bonds — without filing the natural nail plate
  • Dehydrate the nail and apply a primer

Skip any of these steps and you'll see lifting within a week. If you've had gel polish peel off in sheets, this is usually why.

Application thickness matters

Thin layers cure properly under the LED lamp. Thick layers cure on the surface but stay soft underneath — that's when chips happen. At TwentyOne Nails and Spa we apply two to three thin coats with full cures between each.

Aftercare habits that double the wear

  • Cuticle oil daily. Hydrated nails flex with impact instead of cracking the gel.
  • Wear gloves for cleaning. Bleach and dish soap break down gel polish fast.
  • Don't use your nails as tools. Opening cans, picking labels, scratching stickers — all leading causes of chipping.

When to come back

Most London Ontario clients book a refill or fresh set every 2–3 weeks. If you're seeing lifting at the base before week 2, that's a sign the prep wasn't right — and we'd rather you come in for a free inspection than peel it off at home.
